One Idea to a Sixth-Generation Operation
Migrating from Scotland to Australia in 1848, Donald Munro purchased the property “Keera” at Bingara in North West NSW in 1858 launching the start of the Munro generation.
In the early years, shorthorn cattle and merino sheep were the mainstays on the property, but in 1926 Gordon Munro brought the idea of breeding Angus cattle to his father H R Munro. From his research, he believed their maternal traits, meat quality, and foraging ability would work well and utilise the hilly “Keera” paddocks.

The Name Booroomooka Angus
At age 26, Gordon Munro convinced his father to use Angus cattle. H. R. Munro was skeptical, so he told his son that the Angus cattle needed to be put in the Booroomooka back paddock of “Keera.” They could be called anything but Keera or Munro cattle, so the name Booroomooka Angus was born.
In 1926, the Booroomooka Angus Stud was established. The Munros soon became one of the first five breeders to bring Aberdeen Angus cattle to Australia from Scotland.
The first animal bred at Booroomooka was registered in the Aberdeen Angus Society’s Herd Book as being calved in November 1927.
